Sistem zonasi merupakan salah satu kebijakan pendidikan yang menuai polemik dan dampak positif dan negatif di awal-awal kemunculannya. Hal ini dapat dilihat dari temuan penelitian-penelitian yang telah dilakukan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memaparkan fakta di sekolah dan masyarakat terkait dampak yang ditimbulkan dari pelaksanaan sistem zonasi. Hasil penelitian yang ditemukan adalah polemik zonasi yang terjadi dalam masyarakat dipengaruhi oleh beberapa respon yang merasa sistem zonasi telah membatasi kebebasan masyarakat untuk mendapat akses pendidikan terbaik. selain itu, akibat polemik ini melahirkan dampak positif dan negatif dari penerapan zonasi tersebut. Kesimpulan yang didapatkan dalam penelitian ini adalah polemik zonasi yang terjadi tergolong dalam dua hal yakni masalah prosedur (teknis kebijakan) dan masalah substansial (menyangkut hak warganegara). Polemik dari masalah prosedur ini memicu keraguan sebab keberadaan sekolah yang tidak merata dan aturan-aturan kebijakan yang masih banyak dilanggar di lapangan.
